At most, I focus on two types of video poker machines, which I cover at the end of this article. But I’ve played many different types to find the best two for me. The ones that I focus on now are the two that I enjoy playing the most and that are available in most online casinos that offer video poker games.

Every pay table on a video poker machine creates a range of possible returns. When you use the information in the next section, the only part of this range you need to worry about is the top number. The top number of the range is the maximum return percentage that you can get.

For this reason, you only need to memorize the pay tables that offer a return over 99.5%. If a machine doesn’t have one of these pay tables, you can skip it and look for a better machine.

The way to get the maximum return percentage from a pay table is by using the right strategy for the type of video poker machine that you’re playing.

Here’s what video poker strategy is all about. When you get your starting hand, you get to decide which cards to take and which cards to exchange. Based on what you do in this situation, that determines your return on the hand.

The reason why I focus on Jacks or Better is because the machines are easy to find and it’s easy to play. I also enjoy playing this game more than any other type of video poker. Here’s what you need to know about Jacks or Better video poker.

This game doesn’t use any wild cards. The lowest poker hand that you can get that pays is a pair of jacks. The best hand you can get is a royal flush.

I only play on Jacks or Better machines that pay 30 coins for a flush and pay 45 coins for a full house and at least 4,000 coins for a royal flush. These machines provide a return to player percentage of 99.54%.

6 – Deuces Wild Primer

Deuces Wild is the second type of video poker that I focus on. I don’t like it quite as well as Jacks or Better, but it can provide a slightly higher return percentage.

Like the name suggests, all of the deuces or twos in the deck are wild cards. This makes it easier to complete poker hands, but the trade-off is that you have to have a better hand at the bottom of the pay table than when you play Jacks or Better video poker machines.

The lowest-paying hand on a Deuces Wild machine is three of a kind. You can also bet one to five coins per hand like on Jacks or Better, and you should always bet five coins because you get a bonus for the top hand.

1 – Pay Tables

The first step towards beating Deuces Wild is finding a machine that offers a reasonable pay table.

I’ve included the best pay tables in the chart below. The first one, listed as full pay, is rare. But it offers a payback of 100.76% using perfect strategy so if you find one you should jump at the chance to play.

If you can’t find one of the following pay tables you should usually avoid playing. Even the third pay table, the one titled ugly, should be avoided if you can find a better game, but it’s the most common decent paytable available in most casinos.

The NSUD, which stands for not so ugly ducks, is widely available and the one you’ll end up playing the most.

Use the chart to see how the change in payouts for different hands changes the payback percentage. Each pay table has the payback percentage listed at the bottom using perfect strategy. Notice that the NSUD machine actually pays more for five of a kind, straight flush, full house, and flush, but still offers a lower payback than the full pay machine.

If you didn’t know the actual percentages it’s easy to think that an NSUD machine is better than a full pay. That’s why it’s so important to know the pay tables.

All of the pay tables listed below are based on playing five coins per hand. If you play less than five coins you don’t get the bonus for a natural royal flush. All of the machines listed in the chart pay 4,000 coins for a natural royal at five coins.

2 – Basic Strategy

Many video poker players choose to play 9 / 6 Jacks or Better instead of Deuces Wild. The main reason for this is because the basic strategy for Jacks or Better is easier to learn and use than the one for Deuces Wild.

The payback percentage for perfect play on a Jacks or Better machine offering a nine coin payout for a full house and a six coin one for a flush is 99.54%. This is .19%, or less than two-fifths of a percent, difference. With the simpler strategy, it’s a legitimate option for video poker players.

But with a little time and effort, you can learn the best strategy for Deuces Wild.

I’ve included a basic strategy for the full pay Deuces Wild next, and then I’ve given you the basic strategy for the NSUD machine.

The reason for including both is because the odds are that you’ll use the NSUD strategy more often, but you can compare the two. Later in this post I also give you the perfect strategy for a full pay machine, so you can compare it as well.

The perfect strategy is hard to learn, and even the basic strategies can be difficult at first.

You must dedicate yourself to using one of the strategies listed in this post, or you end up giving the house too much of an edge.

If you want to beat Deuces Wild, or at least have a chance to break even with comps and other things you have to always make the right play. Otherwise, you’re wasting your time and would be better off playing baccarat or another low edge game.

3 – Comps

The next important step you need to take to have a chance to beat Deuces Wild is to always make sure you’re getting comps for your play.

When you get comps it gives you back a portion of the money you wager in the form of free play, free meals, free rooms, or something else.

It’s easy to play for comps when you play in a land based casino, and many online casinos also offer a comp system.

Simply sign up for the player’s club and make sure you insert your card every time you play. When you play online, look for the player’s club section and follow the directions.

Some online casinos automatically put you in the club so you start earning comps right away. But if the online casino doesn’t offer a reward or comps system you should find one that does.

The casinos don’t usually publish the exact comp percentages that they offer so you may need to track your play and comps to get an idea.

Most of the comp systems for video poker pay a small return, but even one as low as a quarter percent can be a big help.

Here’s an example:

If you play NSUD using perfect strategy the payback is 99.73%. So if you get a quarter percent, or .25%, in comps, you’re playing with an effective payback of 99.98%.

This is almost a break even play, which is hard to find in a casino.

To put this into actual dollars and cents here’s another example:

If you play 200 hands per hour at $5 per hand you’re expected loss per hour at 99.98% is only 20 cents. That means your expected loss for 100 hours of play is only $20.

If you play a quarter machine, with a $1.25 five coin bet, your expected loss per hour is just five cents. This is only $5 per 100 hours of play.

The thing you need to understand about the pay back percentage and your expected loss is that they’re based on a long term calculation. They also include the big pay out for the natural royal, which doesn’t happen often.

In the short term, which can be thousands of hands, you’re actual results may be much lower. But when you hit a natural royal flush it pushes the numbers back up towards the actual long term edge.

If you can’t find a full pay machine where you have an edge, if you can combine a NSUD pay table with perfect play and a comp program that pays over .27% you’re playing with an edge over the casino.

4 – Bankroll Management

In order to achieve a long term advantage or play at a break even pace you need to be able to manage your bankroll correctly.

I’m not suggesting that you can use a bankroll management technique to beat a casino game, Deuces Wild included. Many so-called bankroll management systems are sold to unsuspecting gamblers that claim you can beat the casino by manipulating your bankroll.

These claims are false and have been proven ineffective mathematically time and time again.

What I’m talking about is planning your bankroll needs so you don’t run out of money during the ups and downs, or swings, associated with playing Deuces Wild.

Even if you play at a break even clip you may spend a great deal of time in the red waiting for a natural royal flush to bring you back close to even or put you up.

If you’re playing a game where the casino has an edge you’re bankroll will consistently go down. In this case you’ll eventually need to add more funds from somewhere else to keep playing. This can be from your job or other source of income, but eventually, it’s going to be necessary unless you can gain a long term edge.

Even if you get enough comps to bring the game to even or slightly over break even you’ll need to ad funds from time to time.

The comps are usually in the form of replacing something that you’d have had to pay for otherwise, so the money still comes out of your bankroll.

The first thing you need to do is determine the expected loss for the time frame of your play. You get this by multiplying the amount you bet per hand times the number of hands you play per hour times the number of hours you plan to play times the house edge of the machine.

You get the house edge by subtracting the payback percentage from 100. I’m using the NSIUD pay table so the house edge is .27%. 100 – 99.73 = .27.

Bet X hands per hour X hours X payback percentage.

Notice that you don’t consider comps in the equation for the previously stated reasons.

Here are some common examples.

The first two lines are for a nickel machine, so five coins at a nickel each is a total wager of 25 cents. The next two lines are a quarter machine with a five coin bet of $1.25, followed by a dollar machine and the last two lines are a $5 machine.

Notice how your hands per hour directly change the expected loss per hour. This means that if you simply play fewer hands per hour you immediately lose less per hour. Any equation like this can be reduced by lowering any of the variables in the equation.

The table uses 10 hours for each example so you can compare the different hands per hour and wager amount. But if you plan to play a different number of hours simply multiply the expected loss per hour number in the final column times the number of hours.

Once you have this number it just gives you the long term expected loss. Remember that in the short run you may play at a larger loss, so you need more than this in your bankroll.

I like to plan my bankroll based on the trip, whether I’m going to the local casino for the day or if I’m going to Las Vegas for a few days.

So for a trip to the local casino I usually plan to play video poker for five hours. On a trip to Las Vegas I might plan for 20 hours of play over the entire trip. I also hate to run out of money to gamble with so I always take more than I need.

If I’m playing on a NSUD machine I usually try to play quarter machines because I tend to play too fast. Even when I try to slow down I still end up with close to 200 hands per hour so a dollar machine is more than I’m willing to chance.

At 200 hands per hour on a quarter machine my expected loss is 67 and a half cents per hour. If I’m playing for five hours my expected loss is only $3.38.

How much do you think I take to play?

Before you read the answer take a guess. And decide how much you think you should take.

I always take at least $200 if I plan to play quarter NSUD. If I might play a dollar machine I always take at least $500.

If I plan a trip to Vegas and 20 hours of play my expected loss is $13.50 on a quarter machine and $54 on a dollar machine. But I always take between $500 and $1,000 on this type of trip.

I’m not telling you that you need to take this much, but with this amount the odds of running out of money are low.

When you try to set an amount to take for a trip it’s helpful to consider a close to worst possible case scenario.

Did you now that some players see as much as 400 hands per hour on a video poker machine? While this may seem like a lot, the truth is that once you learn the best strategy it’s easy to play a hand every 10 seconds or less.

The two hardest hands to hit are the royal flush and four deuces. If you don’t hit a royal flush the effective pay back percentage for the playing session is reduced from 99.73% to 97.89%. When you have a playing session where you don’t hit a royal flush or four deuces the effective pay back percentage is only 94.15%.

If we continue with a session that doesn’t include a wild royal flush the pay back percentage is only 89.39%. If you don’t hit a five of a kind the pay back percentage goes down to 84.41%.

And finally if you don’t hit any of the above hands or a straight flush the pay back percentage is 79.28%.

If you play long the odds of not hitting any of these hands is low, but keep these numbers in mind when trying to determine a proper bankroll for a playing session.

If we assume the chance of playing with a house edge of over 20% for any given session let’s look at some numbers.

$1.25 per hand times 400 hands per hour times five hours times 20% is $500.

So even playing a machine with a 99.73% pay back at $1.25 a hand for five hours can put you in a $500 hole.

This is alarming to many video poker players, but it will happen from time to time. Of course you’re also going to have playing sessions where you win more than you lose.

Over the long term of hundreds of thousands of hands the percentages will work out, but the short term can be scary.

You need to have a large enough bankroll to ride out these ups and downs so you can stay in the game long enough to reach the long term.

5 – Advanced Strategy

Now that you’ve earned which pay tables are the best to use, how comps can help our bottom line, how to manage your bankroll, and a simplified basic strategy to use, it’s time to cover the most advanced strategy possible.

This strategy squeezes every last hundredths of a percentage payback out of the Deuces Wild machine. As you can see, it’s more difficult than the basic strategy you learned above, and the truth is that the miniscule extra advantage it gives you isn’t enough for most players to do the extra work of learning and using it.

The difference in expected value between using this perfect strategy and the basic strategy above is approximately .05%. Notice that this is not 5% or even a half percent. This is five one hundredths of a percent.

To put this into perspective, if you play 100 hours at 200 hands per hour and bet $5 per hand you lose the difference is $50, or 50 cents per hour.

Make sure you always bet five coins per hand so you’re eligible for the bonus when you hit a natural royal flush. If you don’t get the bonus for a natural royal it lowers the pay back percentage and changes the proper perfect strategy.

The first thing to do is see how many deuces you have in your hand and then find the proper section below. Then start at the top of the section and go down the section until you find your hand.
