2017 Kentucky Derby Longshots
EDIT – WOW! the response from KY Derby winners has been so exciting! Check out these Super Screener readers who CASHED on the Derby!
For lovers of long shots, it doesn't get any better than the Kentucky Derby. America’s top horse race frequently produces winners that handsomely reward their backers. From 1990-2005, nine champions entered the starting gate with double-digit odds and two others were close. The pattern now has flipped, and the past three winners were favored. 2020 Kentucky Derby preview. The 2020 Kentucky Derby is scheduled to be run at 7:01 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, Sept. 5 at Churchill Downs in Louisville. That’s the closing weekend of the track’s fall meet, highlighted by the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, a Kentucky Derby qualifying points race. 'All Others' is the betting favorite before the pools open at 7-5 odds; among individual horses, Good Magic leads at 8-1, followed by Bolt d’Oro at 10-1.
Derby 2017 RESULTS!
There was some hope about mid-card that the skies would clear and the rain would stop, but just before the running of the Kentucky Derby, the wind and rain returned turning the track once again to sloppy. Always Dreaming, a top Super Screener win contender, broke well and got the perfect trip close to the rail throughout and every horse that tried to challenge him at any point during the journey backed up through field without a prayer. This is a really, really good horse and reports are he was loaded with energy the next day. This is the 5th year in a row now that the post time favorite has won the race, but two long shots finished 2nd and 3rd to produce some nice Exotics payoffs.
Irish War Cry created havoc when his jock jerked him sharply to the left as they exited the gate causing a chain reaction over several horses coming out of the 10 to 16 gates. Classic Empire suffered the worst of it getting really clobbered losing a lot of ground and Leparoux had no options but to come wide for a late rally which resulted in the 4th place finish and one could argue he really could have been easily second with a better trip.
On the other hand, #1 Lookin At Lee, a Super Screener top long shot bomber pick, got the perfect uninterrupted rail trip saving all kinds of ground and scooting up for a good looking second place finish at delicious odds of 33-1.
Throughout the final weeks leading up to the Derby, Battle of Midway, was one of the top long shot bomber candidates and he was featured in our Derby long shot video. Works leading up to the Derby weren’t that great, however, and both the track conditions and concerns with running close to the contested pace that indeed did materialize had the Screener going with Sonneteer and Lookin At Lee as our final top long shot picks with Battle of Midway landing as our top “C” horse. Sure hope you used him more “under” in your wagers as he ran the race of his life finishing a really good 3rd holding off the late closing Classic Empire at odds of 40-1.
The Exacta wagers in each budget level did connect on the 9-2 over 33-1 Exacta for just over $5,800. Had Classic Empire, with a clean trip, finished 2nd or 3rd, a big batch of those suggested Trifecta wagers would have clicked.

After watching the replay, it was clear the following horses were not striding well on the off going:
Thunder Snow—freaked out of the gate bolting and bucking and was pulled up immediately though he is doing just fine
Sonneeter – was sliding all over the place, couldn’t level out
Hence – Got to the rail but was “hopping” instead of running
Girvin – Wanted no part of the off going
Irap – Started short-striding like when a horse is taking a lot of kick back in the face.
Horses that are highly likely to move up in their next race include:
Classic Empire
Tapwrit
McCraken
Gunnevera
Well, it doesn’t appear that many runners from the Derby field want to take Always Dreaming on in the Preakness. Lookin At Lee is probable and Classic Empire, Tapwrit and Gunnevera are all possible. New shooters include Royal Mo. Even if the field comes up short we’ll be covering it end to end and we’ll be including highly playable under card races featured on Preakness Day.
Can’t thank you enough for subscribing to the Super Screener and we look forward to isolating more of those key long shots that hit the board and do that all year long.
Until next weekend…Go fast and win!
Mike

The Kentucky Derby is still any horse’s race. As post time draws near, let’s discuss the Derby’s longshots. Although these horses are not likely to win, it’s still worth exploring the possibilities.
Have any longshots actually won the Kentucky Derby?
Horse racing fans will remember Mine That Bird’s improbable 2009 Kentucky Derby victory. Surging down the homestretch at 50/1 odds, even the announcer fumbled the call. It’s difficult to remember 20 horses, let alone ones not likely to finish in the top 15. For Trainer D. Wayne Lukas and jockey Calvin Borel, the win was never in doubt.

Kentucky Derby Picks For 2017
- Fast and Accurate – Bet Now – Grade 3 Spiral Stakes winner on March 25, 2017. Also on February 20, 2017 at Gulfstream Park. Trainer Michael J. Maker’s 3 year old might not be favored to win, but is well rested since his last major race. I needed to see Fast and Accurate against other eventual Derby entrants. Competition in his 2 victories was respectable though not the caliber of other favored horses.
- Untrapped – Bet Now – My favorite longshot this year! Untrapped has significant exposure to his competitors, 6th to Classic Empire at the Arkansas Derby; 3rd at the Rebel Stakes; and 2nd to Girven at the Risen Star Stakes. Untrapped has not shied away from a challenge and shouldn’t be counted out. Trainer Steven M. Asmussen is a fixture at each Kentucky Derby, with multiple horses finishing in front over the years.
- Sonneteer – Bet Now – A win has been elusive for trainer Keith Desormeaux’s Sonneteer, though not for lack of trying. Lack Untrapped, Sonneteer has raced hard. He’s finished 2nd in four races, notably to Malagacy in the Rebel Stakes on March 18, 2017. He was 4th to Classic Empire at the Arkansas Derby, just behind another longshot Lookin at Lee. I’m not sure if the Derby’s length is a good fit. Sonneteer’s best races come in at 1mi- 1mi 1/16. The Derby’s 1mi 1/4 distance might be a touch too long.
Recommended Longshot Superfecta Picks
Mix any of my horses into a conservative trifecta box or superfecta part wheel.
Bet a 7 horse superfecta part wheel, placing a longshot with at least 2 other horses in the third and fourth keys. Here’s one idea I had:
